Welcome to Resourceful ReDesigns and the Rusty Magpie Studio

Welcome to my website!  My name is Lisa Paquette Yee – I’m mom to 3 and the daughter of a long line of resourceful people (on both sides of the family tree!).  On my site, you’ll find my take on clever decorating and home staging that rely on imagination and style rather than deep pockets.  Drop by often because like a magpie feathering its nest,  you never know what design and decor adventures will catch my eye next!

I collect ideas for home decorating, get down and dirty looking for “rusty gold” on the occasional picking adventure, make decorative items from architectural and other salvage, and revel in the opportunity to find unique ways to repurpose everyday items – all in the name of making the most of what we have to put the soul back into our homes…

p.s.  Providing services to Lacombe, Alberta, Red Deer, Ponoka, Bentley, Rimbey, Innisfail and beyond.  No matter where you’re from, I’m glad you’re here!  Take a look around, download my F’REE BROCHURE, check out my blog for the latest dish on my decorating and DIY adventures and don’t be afraid to comment and share! :)

Value in a Teapot

Until yesterday, if you asked me about the “value proposition” of my new studio and its products and services – essentially asking  “Tell me the value that your products or service provide” you may have received a stumbling, confusing answer.  Truth be known,  this very query often strikes paralyzing terror into the hearts of artisans, crafters and other people like me engaged in creative endeavors because these words are just not part of our vocabulary.  But having an understanding of your value proposition is the difference between building a thriving business doing what you love and the crushing defeat of posting a permanent “closed” sign on the door.  So lately I’ve been asking myself the question:

What is the benefit of being the green goldfish in a world of orange?

(are you beginning to wonder what this has to do with a Teapot?) Continue reading

I See Green People…

One of the things I love best about upcycling and recycling goods is the mind-blowing creativity that exists in our world that sometimes remains unseen even if you’re staring right at it…for years.  I find it truly neat that now that I have my own green glasses on, I see “green” people and projects everywhere, and am kicking myself that I have overlooked them until now!  And just a hint if you’re still working on your own green glasses:  not all green people can be found digging in our dumpsters although that can be a great place to meet them! :)

For example, being a Prairie girl, old tires and long-forgotten granaries are part of the landscape in farming communities.  But look what amazingly beautiful things have been crafted from them: Continue reading

Flower Power Project Idea

Its spring in Alberta and the hubcaps I used to collect for money as a child are beginning to appear along our roadways.  In tribute to my childhood hobby, I am taking inspiration from Blue Velvet Chair’s Blog: How to Make a Wall Garden and Save the World and working on some HubCap Flower designs of my very own for the new studio’s decor.
Which of these three HubCap designs from Blue Velvet Chair make you smile the most?

You had me at “Swap-O-Matic”…

Not only is the name cool but the concept behind it is pure green.  I can’t say I’ve ever fallen in love with a vending machine before but this is true love, tailor- made for my studio and the mission and values it is being built around.

Swap-O-Matic inventors – what must I do to be the first Canadian owner of such a marvel?

What is the Swap-O-Matic, you may be wondering by now?  The Swap-O-Matic “is a vending machine that encourages users to trade rather than buy! It playfully reminds us that reusing and recycling can be just as fun as buying something new.” (source: http://swap-o-matic.com) Continue reading

Spring Wreath Craft for Kids or Kids-at-Heart

Today is a snow day in Central Alberta.  With three kids home from school and Easter just around the corner, I’m looking for an “Easter-y” craft they can do that we can stretch as looooong as it needs to.   The Egg Carton Spring Wreath (yes, it would appear that I have wreaths on the brain this month!)…

…well it definitely fits the bill and is something I would want to hang in my kitchen, even.  Pop on over to Krafty Kat’s blog and check out her great tutorial for an Egg Carton Spring Wreath.  For my home staging followers, the possibilities are endless with this craft if you’re in need of a little something to fill an awkward blank space on the wall.  And you can get your kids working on it while you’re doing other things to get your home ready for sale!  ;)

So, on to Funky Fungus Fun for your Front Door... Continue reading

Are you a Junker or an Antiquer?

It’s 2012 and its time for me to come out of the closet.  Brace yourself, you may think differently of me after you hear this but I sure hope you won’t!  Whereas I am a natural decorator and love helping people sell their houses through my home staging efforts, in my heart-of-hearts I’m….a….”junker”.  There, I’ve said it.  I’m a junker, not an antiquer but a “junker”.

Now, before you get caught up in visions of me upside down scrabbling in a Dumpster like this….which I seldom ever do and always restrict immersion to no more than an arm, a shoulder at most, let me tell you why I see myself more like this….

First of all, I think an antiquer and a junker are two separate entities.  In my opinion, an antiquer has an appreciation for the “whole original” whereas a junker is someone who retrieves ordinarily discarded things and redefines or re-envisions its use or finds ways to give parts of the original material new life.  In addition, I find the junk hunt a little bit more gritty and Indiana Jones-esque thrilling than your average Antique Mall.  And believe me, when I find what I didn’t even know I was looking for, my find glints just as brightly in my hand as any rare treasure.

An item I recently salvaged – a 1970s recipe book in an abandoned old home – really brought home for me what the ultimate attraction in junking is for me.  My junk items are so much more personal, meaningful than things I buy retail – they’re about finding heritage/heirlooms that don’t even belong to my own family.  Each item I find, I wonder where it came from, who used it, why they used it, what can I use it for to maintain it’s dignity after someone else either throws it away or sells it out! I see beauty in portions of an object and don’t necessarily need the “whole original” to appreciate its worth.

So that’s my deep, dark secret.  I’m a junker and I’m blowing the doors off the closet to bring forth the Rusty Magpie Studio – my Canadian on-line and travelling sales venue for thrifted, junked and otherwise re-envisioned finds that I know will have you dreaming Indiana dreams too.  Stay tuned for more details as they’re unearthed…

But wait, I wanted to ask – what do you think?  Are you a junker or an antiquer? Or do you even agree that there’s a difference?
